CFP: Columbia Music Scholarship Conference "Sound in Struggle: Audible Resistances"

CFP: Columbia Music Scholarship Conference, Columbia University March 2019
Topic: Sound in Struggle: Audible Resistances
Deadline for Abstracts: January 21, 2019

Date: Saturday, March 30, 2018

Location: Columbia University in the City of New York

The annual Columbia Music Scholarship Conference [CMSC] will be held at Columbia University in the City of New York on Saturday, March 30, 2019. We are pleased to announce that the keynote speaker will be Alex E. Chávez, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Notre Dame.

The committee invites submissions from all music disciplines on the theme “Sound in Struggle: Audible Resistances.”  Opposing forces meet in sound: at the level of notes, humans, cosmic forces, and everything in between. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

·       Historical and/or theoretical explorations of oppositions and conflicts as musical elements.

·       The expression and enactment of political and social struggle in sound and soundscapes. This includes sonic politics in both its progressive and reactionary manifestations.

·       Research methodologies and musical pedagogies informed by commitments to resistance and struggle.

·       Accounts of sonic resistance from composers, performers, scholars, pedagogues, and listeners.

We especially welcome papers that address the aforementioned aspects of “Sound in Struggle” in view of broader ethical and pedagogical aspects of music research. Papers that include musical performances and other unconventional presentation elements will be enthusiastically considered.

The conference is open to all participants, although we encourage submissions from graduate students and early-career scholars.

Submission Guidelines:

Papers should be no longer than 20 minutes and will be followed by 10 minutes of discussion (each paper will be allotted a half-hour slot).

Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be submitted by email in pdf or doc format to columbiamsc2019 -at- gmail.com by January 21, 2019. Authors will be notified regarding accepted proposals by February 4, 2019.
