1922: TRANSLATIONS AND MOBILITIES IN SOUND

The workshop is interested in setting the stage for an alternative reading of 1922 deviating from the narrative of “catastrophe” and “uprooting”, the historical problematics of memory, trauma and refugee “identity”. It suggests instead the re-visiting of 1922 beyond its mainstreamed understanding as a crack in the Eastern Mediterranean historical flow and/or a threshold for a process of forced population movement from a supposedly ancestral locality (“the opposite coast” / “the lost homelands”) to a new one, the Greek state. By placing emphasis on a sound/music-centered exploration of 1922 and its afterlives, the workshop aspires to re-visit 1922’s historical cultures and imaginations through the exploration of expanded cartographies of sounds, bodies, songs and objects and their ever shifting knotted trajectories. We are thus looking for 1922 stories narrating global adventures of sonic entanglements, translations, performances, mediations, (re)appropriations without losing sight of historical traumas, violent dislocations and their complex political and cultural frameworks.The sort of listening to 1922’s (post)memories suggested here is embedded within a quest for re-training the ear, in order to re-think, and potentially re-learn, culture and history and our ways of knowing and sensing the past.

The theoretical/research workshop is combined with a sound/media art workshop also based on the research workshop description and leading to projects ideally presented, at a later stage, at a research-based exhibition/performance. This outreaching initiative is purposed to integrate the scholarly and the artistic, while creating a participatory platform for public knowledge.

Attendance requirements:
The theoretical workshop is open to a small number of participants who are expected to offer critical feedback to the presentations and open discussions. It is taking place in The University of Thessaly Conference and Cultural Center, located in the premises of the old St. Nicholas Monastery of Paou (Pelion, http://mpaou.uth.gr/en/).
Eligible applicants are doctoral/postdoctoral students and researchers at the early stages of their career.

The application of attendance should include:
- applicant’s full name, affiliation and a short biographical note.
- a 350 words summary of the applicant’s research focus and interests justifying their relevance with the workshop’s theme.

Participation is free.
