Becoming Noise Music tells the story of noise music in its first 50 years, using a focus on the music's sound and aesthetics to do so.

Part One focuses on the emergence and stabilising of noise music across the 1980s and 1990s. Part Two explores noise in the twenty-first century.
Each chapter tells the story of the style or area under discussion before describing and interpreting in more detail its sound and aesthetic.
Building on previous writers such as Greg Hainge and Paul Hegarty, the book ultimately argues that the aesthetics of noise music pivot on an unresolved but productive dialectical tension between 'musical' order and 'noise' disorder. Noise is not opposed to traditionally understood music or musicality, in this understanding, but instead both honours and expands upon such traditional modes of organising sound.
