CfP: 5. Early Career Workshop in Ethnomusicology (13.-14.11.2026, Folkwang University of the Arts) Deadline: 31.05.2026
5. EARLY CAREER WORKSHOP IN ETHNOMUSICOLOGY
13th and 14th of November 2026
Folkwang University of the Arts
Dear students and doctoral candidates, The National Committee for Germany of the International Council for Traditions of Music and Dance (ICTMD) warmly invites you to the 5th Early Career Workshop in Ethnomusicology. This year’s workshop will take place at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. Our aim is to provide a platform for the exchange and discussion of ideas and to encourage networking among early career ethnomusicologists. The workshop is primarily aimed at advanced B.A. and M.A. students, as well as doctoral candidates working in the field of ethnomusicology or in related fields with an ethnomusicological focus. If capacity allows, we are also happy to consider recent PhD graduates. We welcome a wide range of contributions – from more 'traditional' presentations, presentations of finished or planned projects, feedback sessions and/or discussions of e.g. thesis chapters, but also more 'experimental' formats such as collections of ideas/brainstorming or musical group analysis. Feel free to be creative! Contributions can be submitted in German or English. We also want to ensure there is plenty of time for discussion and (peer-)feedback after each presentation. Additionally, we plan to offer a practice-orientated workshop session for the more general, everyday topics of the academic life and the exchange of personal experiences. This might include academic writing/teaching, power relations in academia, career paths in musicology, information on funding and publishing, and more. Please let us know if you have any particular topics you’d like to talk about!
You can expect:
Getting to know each other and exchanging personal research experiences,
Presentations of individual research projects and discussion of these in a small group,
Networking with other young ethnomusicologists,
Learning about the ICTMD and getting the opportunity to help organize future workshops.
Time and Place:
Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th of November 2026 at the Folkwang University of the Arts (Klemensborn 39, 45239 Essen-Werden, Germany).
Participation:
Please send a short description of your work, project or intention (in German or English, approx. 1 page), including topic, research question, methods, structure, and state of work to ictmd-workshop[at]folkwang-uni[dot]de by 31st of May 2026. You can also participate without giving a presentation, in this case send us a short letter of motivation, also by 31st of May.
We are trying to raise funding to support travel expenses, but we cannot guarantee any subsidies. We encourage you to explore possible funding options (e.g. university societies, travel grants, etc.). Participation in the workshop is free of charge.
ICTMD membership is not required but can be applied for at the workshop if you are interested.
Application deadline: 31st of May 2026
We look forward to receiving your applications! Soudabeh Samiei and the organisation team
