International Summer School of the University of Cologne in collaboration with the
University of Music and Performing Arts Graz
14th – 18th September 2026
Venue: Monastery St. Josef, Wildbad 1, 92318 Neumarkt, Germany
Application Deadline: 22nd May 2026
The Institute for European Ethnomusicology at the University of Cologne in cooperation with the Institute for Ethnomusicology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz is pleased to announce the Summer School Collaboration in Music, Dance, and Research. The English-language Summer School offers students the opportunity to explore current issues in ethnomusicology and ethnochoreology.
In the interconnected world of the 21st century, collaboration becomes increasingly relevant in artistic and research practice. It enables new ways of communication, collaborative knowledge production, and sustainable partnerships, but also bringing challenges. Participating students engage in intensive exchange with each other in their presentations, in workshops, and in a keynote lecture, accompanied by an attractive supporting programme. A particular focus is placed on mutual support in the further development of research projects and academic texts such as term papers, bachelor's theses, master's theses, and dissertations.
During the five-day summer school retreat, projects by young researchers will be presented in individual sessions and brainstorming formats. These will be followed by constructive peer feedback in the form of detailed discussions of experiences and different methodological research approaches, enabling exchange that goes far beyond the scope of an academic conference presentation.
While the first few days focus on getting to know each other and presenting the participants’ projects, the second half of the summer school is devoted to several workshops. One workshop will focus on discussing collaboration in practice, giving examples from the field. In another workshop, participants will critically examine the significance of ethics and power relations in ethnomusicological/ethnochoreological research. A third workshop will address questions of sustainability in dance and music research.
Travel support (participants from Germany: up to 50,- €; EU: up to 100,- €; Non-EU: up to 400,- €) and accommodation (including breakfast) will be covered by the organizers. Further travel costs and meals must be covered by the participants individually. To cover further organizational expenses, students have to pay a participation fee of 100,- € per person.
The Summer School will take place at the Monastery St. Josef, Wildbad 1, 92318 Neumarkt, Germany, with arrivals on Monday before 1 p.m. and departures on Friday after 3 p.m.
The organizers invite applications from graduate, postgraduate, and PhD students from the fields of ethnomusicology, ethnochoreology, or related disciplines. Students interested in participating should send a motivation text including their fields of interest and expertise (max. 100 words) and a short CV to Elias Sotomayor (he/him) elias.sotomayor[at]uni-koeln[dot]de by the 22nd May 2026. Notification of the success of your application will be sent out in early June.
Please direct any questions to Sean Prieske (he/him): sean.prieske[at]uni-koeln[dot]de.
The organizing team looks forward to your applications!
