MUSIC AND GENDER CONFERENCE: NEW HISTORIOGRAPHIC PERSPECTIVES
Autonomous University of Barcelona
Faculty of Arts and Humanities, 26 & 27 November 2026
[Website]
In recenent decades, musicological research has progressively shifted away from canonical narratives towards more critical, hybrid, and interdisciplinary perspectives. Music is no longer conceived solely as an aesthetic object, but also as a social, embodied, and political practice shaped by questions of gender. Starting from this premise, this conference aims to provide an interdisciplinary forum for discussion and research, fostering new historiographical mappings that contribute to making visible figures, practices, and experiences related to gender that have historically been relegated to the margins of the dominant musical canon.
Proposals are invited on topics including, but not limited to, the following thematic areas:
Biographical re-readings and revision of the canon
Archives, absences, and historiographical recovery
Representations and gender identities in musical practices
Spaces, networks, and patronage
Creation, performance, and gender: voices, instruments, and musical technologies
Pedagogy, transmission, and musical memory
Those interested are invited to submit a proposal including a title, an abstract of up to 250 words, and a brief biographical note. Proposals may be submitted in Catalan, Spanish, or English. The deadline for abstract submission is 15 July 2026. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 31 July 2026.
Proposals should be sent to congresmusicagenere[at]gmail[dot]com
