Web: Instrumenta – A cultural index of Latin American independent music
Instrumenta ist eine lebendige, kollaborative Karte der unabhängigen Musikszenen Lateinamerikas, mit Labels, Spielstätten, Festivals, Plattenläden und Bands, geordnet nach Land und Stadt.
Das Projekt entstand aus dem Wunsch, ein großes und verstreutes Ökosystem sichtbar zu machen, das selten als Ganzes erscheint. Die Einträge werden von den Menschen aus den Szenen selbst hinzugefügt und gepflegt, wodurch die Karte zugleich Ressource und sich wandelnder Forschungsgegenstand ist. Sie kann für Forschung, Lehre, oder einfach zur Kartierung eines von außen schwer fassbaren Feldes nützlich sein.
Instrumenta ist soeben als App im App Store erschienen, kostenlos, eine Android-Version folgt. Sie läuft auch in jedem Browser unter instrumenta.app.

Most music platforms are built to measure attention. They rank by plays, sort by popularity, and optimise for scale. Instrumenta is built for something different.
Independent music in Latin America is made by people working without major label budgets, without algorithmic push, and often without basic infrastructure. Bands rehearse in garages and basements. Labels run from apartments. Venues open and close inside a few years. Fanzines appear, disappear, reappear under another name. Community radios and record stores keep local scenes connected when nothing else does.
Instrumenta indexes this work. Cities are the primary unit, because scenes are local before they are anything else. When a venue in Lima closes, it does not show up in global metrics. When a cassette label in Monterrey puts out its twentieth release, no playlist notices. Both belong in the record.
Latin America is under-documented in the infrastructure of music itself. Most mapping of the region's music scenes is done from outside, in English, by people who arrive for a festival and leave. Instrumenta is an attempt to build that mapping from the inside, in three languages, entity by entity.
